  • Northumberland Communities
In June 2001 Northumberland Archives Service was awarded a grant of £47,100 from The New Opportunities Fund (NOF) to digitise a range of sources relating to the history of 76 Northumberland communities. The project focuses on the history of 76 Northumberland communities – small ports, market towns, villages, larger towns and villages that have developed as a result of mining industries and one New Town. Original source material has been selected and digitised for each of these communities. This includes maps, plans, estate, court, church and school records, photographs and oral history recordings. It is intended that individuals, groups and educational establishments will use this digitised material as a starting point for understanding the development of Northumberland communities and that this material will provide a base for studying the County’s history.

  • Tyneside Life and Times
Tyneside Life and Times is a two year project which will be completed in April 2004. It is one of the four Sense of Place North East projects which aim to give a sense of the culture, heritage and history of the North East of England through providing web-accessible digitised objects, pictures, sound recordings, and documents. The Tyneside Life and Times project is supported by Newcastle, and is based in Newcastle Libraries and Information Service. The project is digitising 8,000 images from the Local Studies pictures collection, and creating learning materials based on those pictures. The project team is using the Local Studies rich and varied collection of books, periodicals and maps to research additional information about the pictures.
